Therapy changed my life.

I’ve been in the mental health field for a long time and people’s capacities to be vulnerable still surprise me in the pleasantest of ways. It’s astounding to see how even the most private person can open up about their life, about their unique experiences that shape their individual personalities.

I’ve found (not as a therapist, but as a person) that everyone can benefit from therapy.

Sure, it began as a “talking cure” for clinical disorders but the current scope of therapy is more or less all-inclusive. Now, therapy isn’t just about becoming less “depressed” or “anxious” but also targets self-development and growth. More and more people are seeking out therapy as a way of working on themselves, to identify what they can do better and discover the best version of themselves.

Here’s a perspective: when it comes to mental health, why not see therapy as a boost for your psychological immunity? Let’s not forget that the mind and body do not function as separate systems but are a part of a holistic system. Mental illness and health are two sides of a very complex coin, and the balance between the two can be feeble. A regular tune-up of our mental states can help keep us healthy.

After all, we all have our own fair share of burdens to carry. Why not allow someone to help you carry that burden, or lighten the load altogether? Whatever it is that you’re going through, in whatever capacity: you deserve to work on yourself and engage in this form of self-care.

For those of my readers who are struggling right now, let yourself not suffer in silence. As a society, we still have antiquated notions of how seeking mental health services is a sign of weakness. Going through a form of mental illness is absolutely not an indicator of personal strength, and engaging in therapy isn’t either. On the contrary, seeking therapy in itself is a positive sign, because it also means that as a person, you’re open to change and open to revolutionising your personality patterns. After all, most of us have behaviours and patterns of responding that – let’s face it – aren’t helpful to us. To be able to face that and do something about it is a smart move.

Regardless of how well we feel we know ourselves, just like we cannot extract our own tooth, we cannot always work upon extracting unhelpful personality patterns without expert assistance. After all, therapy isn’t about being helped by someone but learning how to help yourself in the best way possible.

If you need someone to hear you out, if you feel like your growth is stifled, if you feel disconnected – try therapy. Let’s give ourselves a chance.
